LONESOME GEORGE DIES – SAD NEWS FOR THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS
Lonesome George, a tortoise native to Pinta Island and a conservation icon for the Galapagos Islands, was found dead in his coral. The last survivor of his subspecies, he became part of the breeding program at the Galapagos National Park. For several decades scientists attempted to breed George with closely related females, but with no success.
